I built this piece alongside my students I was assisting in a coffee table class. The warmth of the sapele recalled teak and mahogany and I looked to mid-century and Scandinavian furniture for inspiration. Built over two weeks — the fastest I've ever made a piece of furniture to date — this piece also feels the most aesthetically and technically coherent -- possibly because I was the same maker, with the same skills and concerns, over that brief period of time.
